Actor's SUV stolen from outside Santa Cruz society

MUMBAI: In reel life, he was a master conman, stealing valuables from right under people's noses, but on Thursday, it was actor Abhay Deol's turn to be at the receving end. The Oye Lucky Lucky Oye star's Mitsubishi Pajero was stolen from outside his residential building in Santa Cruz (W).

The vehicle, a 2008 make, was worth Rs 12 lakh. Interestingly, it even has a special number-MH02 BG 420. The actor had parked it outsideMadhuban Society on Wednesday evening. The next morning, the SUV was nowhere to be found. Deol has lodged a vehicle theft case at the Santa Cruz police station. The society's guards told the police that they had seen the vehicle parked at the spot till late night. The police suspect the accused stole it early on Thursday.

The police are trying to get some leads from the CCTV footage of the surrounding areas. The police learnt that a vehicle was moving suspiciously in the area at the time of the incident. They have also alerted all police stations about the theft.

An officer said, "We are checking parking lots and isolated spots to trace the SUV."

The car thieves mostly park stolen vehicles at isolated spots for a few days till they prepare their forged documents. They then take the stolen vehicles to other states with fake licence plates. "Before elections, the demand for stolen SUVs increases drastically. The stolen vehicles are used in election campaigns," said an officer.

The officers said there are dubious car suppliers in every state. They promise to get SUVs for customers at cheap rates, which they get from car thieves.

There are several car thieves gang operating in the city. In past the police busted several such gangs and put them behind the bar. Recently escaped Indian Mujahideen terrorist, Afzal Usmani, was also an infamous car thief. He had supplied stolen vehicle to IM operatives in 2008, and they use it Gujarat blasts.
