Struck by bird, Delhi-bound jet makes emergency landing

RANCHI: Around 100 passengers, including former chief minister Madhu Koda and wife Geeta, had a close shave when a Delhi-boundIndigo flight Airbus 320 was hit by a bird on Monday morning.

The flight had just taken off a few metres from the ground when a bird came its way at 10.10am. Following the incident, he flight made anemergency landing at Ranchi airport and all passengers were safe, said airport authorities.

The aircraft with 100-odd fliers remained grounded till late in the evening and aviation engineers were on the job to repair it. The flight was going to Delhi from Ranchi.

Airport director Raju Raghwendra Kumar said the flight had just taken off when a bird hit it. "The pilot sus decided to abort the flight," said Kumar.

Sources said that the bird struck the engine fan and it stuck to it. The passengers received jerks because as soon as it took off from the surface it came down with a jerk.

The doors of the bathrooms of the flight were flung open. The passengers suspected that the aircraft had encountered some serious problems but they breathed a sigh of relief when they came to know that the plane had successfully landed.

The pilot took the flight to the apron for repair.

Kumar said that the airline contacted its engineers who came with the next available flight for repair. The repair work, however, continued till 8pm. The airline arranged a connecting flight for all the passengers, said airport director. The passengers, however, were stranded for a long time before they could board the next flight.

Neither Madhu Koda nor his wife could be contacted for comments.
