Delhi: 6kg gold seized

NEW DELHI: A man trying to smuggle gold worth Rs 1.73 crore into the capital was arrested from IGI Airport on Monday. The accused is from Moradabad, Uttar Pradesh, and was coming from Dubai. Six gold bars weighing one kg each were recovered from him.

He had hidden the gold bars in a cotton belt which he wrapped around his waist beneath the trousers, said a custom official. He was caught while being frisked.

The recovery of smuggled gold comes at a time when the Directorate General of Revenue Intelligence has sounded an alert to all international airports and other transit points within the country to intensify measures, including minutely scanning of suspect passengers and commercial consignments, to check smuggling of gold. This alert follows recent structural changes in import duty of gold by the finance ministry.
