Chinese website begins selling aircraft

BEIJING: China's online-shopping websiteTaobao began selling aircraft and helicopters over the internet on Thursday. It put up three helicopters and two light sports aircraft on auction for four days until 10 am Monday.

Bidding for one of the products, an Australian aircraft, began at as little at one yuan. The owners of Taobao said anyone who paid the minimum deposit ranging between 2000 yuan and 50,000 yuan could participate in the auction. "Buying a plane online is not something new in some foreign countries, but in China only a small group of people can have the opportunity to buy aircraft due to various limits," a Taobao representative said.

The bidding followed clear signs the government is encouraging the use of private aircraft. It is in the process of implementing new rules for granting airspace to small aircraft and allowing shorter training limits for pilots flying small aircraft.

Aircraft put on auction include a Jabiru J160C training aircraft and a Eurocopter EC120 Colibrihelicopter with an auction price of 16.8 million yuan. The bidding is expected to range between $170,000 and $2.72 million.

Bombardier, a leading general-aviation manufacturer, has forecast the country's business-jet sector will rise more than tenfold to 2,590 jets in 2031, from 210 in 2011.
